Fermilab will start reviewing applications Feb. 15 for their cohort starting in summer 2010. The 3 year program includes participating in research project(s) at a national laboratory, implementing technology-supported inquiry with students, educational leadership, using Web 2.0 collaboration tools and online meetings for follow-up support, and financial support for classroom equipment and further professional development.

Excellence in Encouraging Equity Award

Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge

The Siemens Foundation, Discovery Education, and NSTA are partnering again this year to educate, empower, and engage students and teachers nationwide to become "Agents of Change" in improving their communities. The second year of this national sustainability challenge—now expanded to include elementary school students—encourages K–8 students to team with their classmates to create replicable solutions to environmental issues in their classroom (grades K–2), school (grades 3–5) ,and community (grades 6–8). Top prizes will include a chance to appear on Discovery Network's Planet Green, a share in thousands of dollars in savings bonds, a Discovery Adventure trip, and more.

Gr 6-12: International Polar Year Opportunity for the Summer of 2010

IPY Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Polar Connections is designed to promote the teaching of science concepts and processes related to the polar regions, and to emphasize connections to State and National Science Standards for the middle and high school.

The one-week summer institute and academic-year online discussion forums has funding from NSF and U Mass, and will feature a variety of proven techniques for effective teaching, including inquiry-based teaching, cooperative learning, and methods for formative assessment of student learning.

Features of the program include: - 12-16 July 2010 at UMass Amherst plus academic year online discussions; - Housing (air conditioned single dorm rooms, 10 minutes away), meals, and travel costs for teachers outside the commuting area; - $75/day stipends ($375 total); - Funds to attend conferences for dissemination; - 3 graduate credits available at reduced cost and free professional development points - Ongoing partnerships with UMass faculty.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the Nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science. The Awards recognize outstanding K-12 teachers for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. 2010 awardees will be selected from K-6 teachers.

Earthwatch Institute's Live from the Field Fellowships

Live from the Field educators join research teams on one- to two-week expeditions during the school year and share their experiences directly with their students back at home by posting journal entries, photos, lessons, and suggested activities online, as well as through live video or phone conferences with their classrooms. Given the opportunity to work with leading scientists at research stations around the world, participants gain field research skills, explore different cultures, and learn about global conservation issues.

Department of Energy Academies Creating Teacher Scientists Program

The Department of Energy Academies Creating Teacher Scientists (DOE ACTS) program is designed to create a cadre of outstanding science and math teachers with the proper content knowledge and scientific research experience to serve as leaders and agents of positive change in their local and regional teaching communities. Teachers will establish long-term relationships with their mentor scientists and teaching colleagues, who will continue to support teachers when they return to their classrooms.

Teaching Research Ethics Workshop

Middle school and high school educators can join National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists and education specialists for a Climate Change Here and Now: Coastal, Ocean and Atmospheric Impacts, a free NSTA web seminar. Climate is an ideal interdisciplinary theme for learning about the scientific process and the ways in which humans affect and are affected by the Earth’s systems.

Georgia Intern-Fellowshmips for Teachers (GIFT)

The Georgia Institute of Technology's Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing accepts applications for six- to eight-week summer internships with the GIFT program. GIFT has placed middle and high school math, science, and technology teachers in more than 900 positions throughout the state. In these fellowships, teachers are involved in cutting-edge scientific research, data analysis, curriculum development, and real-world inquiry and problem solving.

Outstanding New Biology Teacher Achievement Award

This National Association of Biology Teachers award recognizes outstanding teaching (grades 7-12) by a biology/life science instructor within his/her first three years of teaching (when nominated) who has developed an original and outstanding program or technique and made a contribution to the profession at the start of his/her career. A recognition plaque is presented to the award winner at the NABT Professional Development Conference, and he/she also receives a complimentary one-year NABT membership.

Ron Mardigian Biotechnology Teaching Award

Sponsored by Bio-Rad Laboratories, the award recognizes a secondary school teacher or undergraduate college biology instructor who has demonstrated outstanding and creative teaching of biotechnology in the classroom. Maximum award: $1,000 toward travel to the NABT Professional Development Conference, and $500 of Vernier equipment.
