Content Management

Content Management is a set of processes and technologies that support the evolutionary life cycle of digital information. It provides for the organized storage of content to facilitate location, update, and use of content.

Distribution System

A Distribution System facilitates the dissemination of content to the outside world. The distribution process can disseminate content as it is stored or combined with other content to produce a new result.

Community

A Community is the lowest level of the hierarchy for organizing records. Communities can contain Collections only. Records are not located directly in a Community.

Collection

A Collection is part of the hierarchy for organizing records. Collections can contain sub-Collections and/or Records.

Sub-Collection

A Collection is referred to as a Sub-Collection when it lives inside a Collection instead of a Community. Sub-Collections are often referred to simply as Collection.

Record

A Record is the object in the Content Management Subsystem that holds metadata and content as text, related links, and uploaded files.

Metadata

Metadata is data about data. Metadata is generally stored in the pre-defined fields of a record. It describes the primary content of the record, which can be an uploaded file, related link, or content stored in a field in the record. Because OnRamp is used as a Content Management System, it is not uncommon for pre-defined fields to hold content instead of metadata.

Content

Content is digitally stored information. Digital content may take the form of text (ex. text or html encoded text stored in fields or uploaded files), proprietary text formats (ex. PDF files, Word Documents), structured text (ex. RSS Feeds, XML), multimedia files (ex. images, audio, video), links to resources (ex. complex content as displayed in a webpage or a series of webpages), or any other file type.

Uploaded File

Uploading a file is the process of copying a file from one file system (your computer) to another (the OnRamp server). A copy of the uploaded file is stored in the record where it was uploaded along with a description of the file. Changes to the original source file do not affect the uploaded (copied) version of the file. Records allow uploading of multiple files.

Related Link

A Related Link is an URL along with a description. Establishing a related link is the process of storing an URL in a Related Link field in a record. Records allow multiple related links to be identified.

Published

The status of a record is set to Published when the Publish button is used to save the record through the Create or Edit screens or is published through My OnRamp. A Published record is considered complete and is visible for viewing, typically by any person with internet access. See security for more information on who can view records.

Unpublished

The status of a record is set to Unpublished when the Submit for Approval button is used to save the record through the Create or Edit screens. A state of Unpublished tells the publisher users that the record is ready for their review. Unpublished records are available through My OnRamp only and require the user to be logged in inorder to view or edit.

Saved

The status of a record is set to Saved when the Save button is used to save the record through the Create or Edit screens. A state of Saved tells the other users that the record is not yet ready for their review. Saved records are available through My OnRamp only and require the user to be logged in inorder to view or edit. Any user with editing privileges can modify and even Submit for Approval a saved record. The Saved state is a suggestion that the record isn't yet ready for being published.
