The NSDL Collection System (NCS) is a tool to create and manage collections of metadata within an NCore repository. The NCS is a flexible XML-driven tool that provides a full-featured metadata editor, collection work flow processes, and a role-based permission system in support of distributed and collaborative collections management. The NCS transparently writes metadata and collection-level information to an NCore Repository using the NCore API.

The NCS is currently employed as the collection management system of the NSDL, supporting staff located across the country. As part of NCore, the NCS is available as a metadata management and cataloging tool to support projects using the NCore platform.

Current Work in Progress

  • inputHelpers - a generic mechanism for third-party plugins that help calculate a value for a metadata field. The SMILE project used this mechanism to integrate their "geo-footprint" tool, which helps users to create bounding box using google maps, and then inserts the bounding box values into the appropriate metadata fields.
